Tragic Rail Accident in Jhunjhunu: Elderly Woman Dies at Bakra Crossing — Suicide or Accident?

Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan:
A heart-wrenching incident early Wednesday morning (October 29, 2025) shocked the residents of Jhunjhunu city. An unidentified elderly woman lost her life after being hit by a passenger train near Bakra Railway Crossing. The train was traveling from Delhi to Sikar. What initially appeared to be a tragic accident is now being probed as a possible case of suicide, raising serious questions for both the police and the local administration.

Eyewitness Account: “She Stepped Onto the Tracks Intentionally”

The horrifying event occurred around 11:30 AM when the Delhi–Sikar route train was passing at its usual speed.
Witnesses told police that the woman was walking along the railway track and suddenly stepped in front of the oncoming train. Onlookers reportedly shouted in an attempt to stop her, but within seconds, the tragedy unfolded.

According to witnesses, the deceased was between 65 and 70 years old. The impact of the collision was so severe that her body was badly mutilated, making immediate identification impossible. Police officers at the scene confirmed that due to the extent of the injuries, identification could only be made after further forensic procedures.

Police Investigation: Suicide Suspected, But No Final Conclusion Yet

Both the Government Railway Police (GRP) and local Jhunjhunu police reached the scene soon after the incident. GRP Head Constable Rajiv Janu led the team’s inspection, and train movement was temporarily halted.

A police officer stated:

“Eyewitnesses clearly said the woman was walking parallel to the tracks and stepped between the rails as the train approached. It appears to be a suicide attempt, but without proper identification or a suicide note, we cannot reach any final conclusion.”

Major Challenge: Identifying the Deceased

Efforts are underway to identify the deceased through her clothes, physical description, and other features. Her photos and details have been circulated to nearby police stations, dharamshalas, and on social media platforms to trace her relatives.

Since no one came forward at the site to recognize her, police suspect the woman may not have been a local resident of Jhunjhunu but could have come from another area.

Mental Distress or Misfortune? Investigation to Reveal Truth

At this stage, authorities are uncertain whether the woman took this step due to family disputes, emotional distress, or any other compulsion — or if it was simply a tragic accident.
Police say that only after the post-mortem and identification process will they be able to determine the real cause.

A Growing Pattern of Rail Tragedies in Jhunjhunu

This is not the first such tragedy in the district. Over the past few years, several similar cases have been reported where people have taken their own lives by jumping in front of trains — pointing toward an alarming rise in mental health struggles and loneliness in society.

  • The Teacher’s Case: A few months ago, a female schoolteacher ended her life by jumping before a moving train near Gudha crossing. CCTV footage showed her running toward the tracks after getting off a bus.
  • Medical Student’s Death: In another case, a medical student committed suicide in the same way. Investigations revealed that he sat near the track for over an hour, smoking a cigarette — indicating a planned act.
  • Police Constable Incident: A few years back, an RAC constable, distressed over family issues, attacked his wife and son before jumping in front of a train himself.

These back-to-back tragedies have compelled local authorities and communities to reflect deeply on the growing mental health crisis and social isolation among people.

Community and Police Appeal for Cooperation
